Moving 20 tonnes across a fabrication hall looks simple until you try it. Overhead cranes only cover their own span. Forklifts can’t take the weight. Renting a mobile crane for a 30-metre indoor move costs more than the steel being moved. YG battery powered load moving skates fill that gap: they sit under the load, drive on four wheels, and pull 20 tonnes with one person on a remote. This is how a Rotterdam steel fabricator replaced five crane bookings a month with two skates.

Why Dutch Heavy Industry Needs Battery Powered Load Moving Skates
Dutch fabrication halls run tight. Floor space costs more than equipment, so shops pack machines close and leave no lane for a forklift.
Three forces make them the practical answer here:
- Indoor emission rules. Diesel equipment in a closed hall faces strict NOx and particulate limits. Electric skates produce nothing.
- Floor loading limits. A 20-tonne diesel forklift weighs 30 tonnes itself. Most 1990s slabs won’t take it. A skate spreads load through a Q355 plate.
- Crane cost. A mobile crane with operator runs €900-1,300 for a half day near Rotterdam, booked days ahead.

Project Background: A Steel Fabricator in Rotterdam
Bram V. runs a family steel shop in the Botlek zone, 20km west of Rotterdam port. Founded in 1987, 28 employees, four bays of 32 metres.
The work is offshore wind and marine: transition pieces, flanges, and pile sections for North Sea projects. Pieces run 14 to 22 tonnes and up to 14 metres long.
Two overhead cranes cover the hall — 10 tonnes and 16 tonnes. Neither leaves its bay.
The Core Problem: Moving 20 Ton Between Bays
Every job crosses bays at least twice: cutting in bay 1, welding in bay 3, blasting and coating in bay 4. That’s 35 to 45 metres, and no crane reaches it.
What the shop did before:
- Book a mobile crane. €1,150 for a half day with operator, 3 days out.
- Assign three people. Rigger, signalman, spotter — 2.5 hours each.
- Wait. A late crane stopped the whole bay.
Five bookings a month cost €5,750 in crane time alone, before labour. Worse, the schedule bent around the rental calendar.
Bram ruled out a 20-tonne diesel forklift too. The slab in bays 2 and 4 is 200mm concrete on grade, rated 5t/m². A loaded forklift would crack it.
YG Solution: An Electric Machine Mover Skate
We quoted two YG-20 units — an electric load skate rated to 20 tonnes — so one works while the other charges. The configuration:
- Drive: two 750w braked motors, D2T80A dual-driver controller, four polyurethane wheels
- Power: 48V 60AH lithium iron phosphate, one spare battery per unit
- Charger: 230V/50Hz single phase — the Dutch standard, not the 380V/50Hz we ship to Asia
- Remote: wireless, 30-metre range, so the operator stands outside the load path
- Deck: 10mm Q355 steel plate with anti-slip coating
- Compliance: CE under Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC and EMC 2014/30/EU, plus UN38.3 reports for the lithium cells
- Documents: manuals in English and Dutch
Floor requirements: flat concrete or epoxy, joints under 5mm, slope under 3%, no steel grating.
An electric machine mover skate earns its cost on floor condition, not just tonnage. Send photos of your worst joint and we’ll tell you whether it will cross.

Operating Results of the 20 Ton Load Skate
The first unit went into service in week two. Bram’s crew moved a 19.4-tonne transition piece 42 metres in 25 minutes — a job that used to eat half a day.
Measured over two months:
- Transfer time: 2.5 hours → 25 minutes
- Crew per move: 3 people → 1 person
- Crane bookings: 5 per month → 0 for internal moves
- Battery runtime: 7 hours intermittent per charge
- Recharge: 4 hours, swapped mid-shift with the spare pack
- Floor damage: none
The second unit now unloads at the yard door, moving finished sections from truck bed to the coating bay.
Client Feedback and ROI After Six Months
Bram ran the numbers at month six.
| Item | Before | After |
| Crane rental per month | €5,750 (5 moves) | €0 internal |
| Labour per move | €262 (3 people, 2.5h) | €15 (1 person, 25min) |
| Cost per internal move | €1,412 | €102 |
| Monthly internal move cost | €7,060 | €510 |
Capital outlay: two YG-20 units, freight to Rotterdam, customs, spare batteries, and charging trolleys came to €15,600.
Monthly saving: €6,550. Payback: about two and a half months.
Bram also counts what doesn’t show on the invoice — two urgent jobs that would have waited for a crane slot went out on time.
“We used to plan production around the crane booking. Now the crane comes when we need it, not when the rental company has a slot. The skates gave us back our schedule.” — Bram V., Rotterdam

Frequently Asked Questions About 20 Ton Load Skates
FAQ 1: Can the Skate Cross Floor Joints and Ramps?
Up to 5mm joints and 3% slope, yes. Above that you need a transition plate. Send photos and we’ll confirm.
FAQ 2: How Long Does the Battery Last on a Full Charge?
About 7 hours intermittent on a 48V 60AH pack, roughly 4 hours continuous. A spare battery swaps in two minutes.
FAQ 3: Does It Come With CE Certification?
Yes. CE marking under Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC and EMC 2014/30/EU, plus UN38.3 reports and a Declaration of Conformity.
FAQ 4: Can One Person Operate It?
Yes. The remote has a 30-metre range, so the operator walks beside the load with a clear view. We still suggest a spotter above 15 tonnes.
FAQ 5: How Long Is Shipping to Rotterdam?
About 30-35 days by sea from Shanghai, plus 5-7 days for EU customs. We handle the export documents and CE file.
